St. Helens' Megan Oyler wins Jefferson High Open championship; Scappoose's Wendy Sanchez third
St. Helens and Scappoose's girls showed off their wrestling potential at the Jefferson High School Open Friday, Dec. 29, 2017, in Portland.
Lions junior Megan Oyler and Class 3A Warrenton junior Ruby Dyer faced off twice for the 275-pound championship, and Oyler pulled a sweep.
Oyler and Dyer needed only to beat the other in their two-competitor, three-round class, and Oyler put away Dyer in 4 minutes, 40 seconds in the first go and in 2:29 in the second.
"We worked on some new stuff at practice and I used it to my advantage," Oyler said.
Quinnlyn Coddington, a Lions senior, emerged third at 180 as she fell to Class 6A Century junior and eventual first-place Lilliann Restrepo (3:41) in the quarterfinal but beat Parkrose senior Dianna Tupper (4:15), Mountain View (Vancouver, Wash.) sophomore Indra Gaitan (:41) in consolation and overpowered Warrenton junior Noel O'Bryan (3:31) for third.
Kara Smith, a senior at 160, fell to Union (Camas, Wash.) junior and eventual medalist Annabelle Helm 5-0 in her quarterfinal, received a consolation bye and lost a 10-9 tiebreaker to Jefferson sophomore Blessing Jamison.
In the Indians' corner, sophomore Wendy Sanchez sealed third at 100 in 7-4 fashion over Warrenton junior Sahanna Rodriguez.
Sanchez placed after falling to hometown Class 6A Jefferson freshman and Open winner Isabella Schulz (:33) in the semifinal, before and after which she received byes.
Emma Jones followed in fourth at 117, and Taylor Johnson and Karlie Ragan reached respective fifth and sixth at 135.
The Tribe ranked fifth with 35 points and St. Helens (21) earned 10th.
"The meet itself was a great learning experience for all the girls including myself," Sanchez said. "I think we all did fairly well, and I can see us all improving."
