The Scappoose girls soccer team secured a spot into the 5A playoffs after earning a 1-1 draw at La Salle Prep in the league finale last week.

La Salle Prep's Maddie Khaw opened the scoring with a shot to the far post 49 minutes into the match.

Scappoose answered barely a minute later when Rylee Cook drew a foul 20 yards out near the sideline. Lauren Whisenhunt sent a high free kick into a crowd at the far post where teammate Emma Jones was able to get a foot on it to deflect the equalizer into the net.

"We got that set piece, and Lauren always plays a good ball in. We just needed someone on the other end to tap it in," Jones said. "Sometimes you have to push through people to get in there. I just knew I had to get it, this was a game we couldn't afford to lose."

The teams finished the season tied for second place in the Northwest Oregon Conference — each qualifying for the playoffs.

Scappoose travels to Corvallis for its first-round match at 6 p.m. Halloween night.
