Local sports roundup: Oregon State's Sass, Oregon's Galey, Pilots' Kavulich get in on the action

COLLEGE SOFTBALL: Michelle Sass of Oregon State, a senior from St. Helens High, went 2 for 3 with a double in the middle game of a three-game series with 11th-ranked Arizona.

The Wildcats swept the Beavers, winning 9-1, 11-4 and 4-0.

Sass started at second base in all three games and was 2 for 7 for the weekend.

Arizona no-hit OSU in the finale.

• Oregon freshman Hannah Galey, playing designated hitter and left field, stroked an RBI single in the sixth inning to help the Ducks win 5-0 on Wednesday at University of the Pacific in Stockton, California.

Galey went 1 for 3.

It was Oregon's first win in its last 13 games and lifted the Ducks to 12-16 overall.

COLLEGE TRACK AND FIELD: University of Portland freshman John Kavulich is continuing his improvement on the track.

The high school state champion from Scappoose High set a personal best in the 1,500 meters at the March 23 Willamette Invitational in Salem. He finished in 4 minutes, 6.24 seconds, placing 15th. His previous best was 4:11.60.
