Indians land 2 on all-league baseball team
Two Scappoose Indians have been chosen for the all-Northwest Oregon Conference first team in baseball.
Senior infielder Jordan Buchanan and junior outfielder Logan Travis made the squad by vote of coaches in the Class 5A league.
Travis also was chosen for honorable mention as a pitcher.
St. Helens had two players picked for the all-NWOC second team: senior outfielder Chris Beatty and senior pitcher Jacob Klein.
Scappoose had one second-teamer: senior Breeler Mann, as an outfielder.
Mann also was one of five Indians earning honorable mention in six spots. Along with Mann and pitcher Travis, the Scappoose HM selections were senior Quincy Cleveland (utility), senior Gavin Larson (first base) and junior Ben Anicker (infield and pitcher).
St. Helens had three players on the honorable mention list. Sophomore catcher Jacobi Allen made it, as did junior infielder Garrett Harris and senior first baseman Justin Olson.
Both NWOC first-teamers from Scappoose led by example and in preparation for the season, as well as in the classroom, pulling down GPAs over 3.5, notes Scappoose coach Cameron Webb.
Buchanan, a three-sport athlete throughout his high school career (cross country and basketball as well) "was one of the first kids that would hit me up to go in the cage and work on his swing after I got the job," Webb says.
Buchanan played second base and gave the Indians consistently hard hitting.
"He has naturally fast hands, which is why he has explosive line-drive ability," Webb says.
Buchanan finished the year with 26 hits, about one per game, and opened the year with a big home run to help lift the Indians to a win against South Albany.
"He was our most consistent hitter throughout the season," Webb says. "We could count on him to hit the ball hard and hit a couple of line drives every game.
"And he was a very good teammate — the first guy to encourage somebody else when they were down."
Travis showed plenty of self-motivation and self-discipline, Webb says, as he came off the shelf and became a force at the plate, in the outfield and on the mound during league play.
"In January, he organized our long-toss and conditioning program and got guys out there, totally led all of that," Webb says.
While pitching is "probably his highest potential, hitting is where he earned his real accolades," Webb says. "If there's an optional practice, he's always in there and focused on every detail of his swing. He hit for a lot of power this season, hit one long home run to the street in left-center at home. Even with two strikes he found a way to hit a ball hard."
