McNabb, Linfield Wildcats to visit Chapman Tigers for football playoff opener

MCNABBCollege football: Freshman running back Connor McNabb from Scappoose High will get his first taste of the national playoffs on Saturday when the Linfield Wildcats visit the Chapman Panthers for a noon NCAA Division III first-round game.

Linfield earned its berth by winning the Northwest Conference with a harrowing 38-31 overtime victory Nov. 9 at runner-up Whitworth. The Wildcats finished their regular season last week with a 24-17 home win over George Fox.

McNabb caught a 6-yard in the George Fox game and this season has eight receptions for 114 yards and one touchdown along with 29 rushes for 135 yards and two TDs.

Linfield (8-1) is ranked 15th in the nation by the D-III coaches and 20th by d3football.com

Chapman (9-0) is ranked 13th and 12th.

Linfield lost 27-19 at Redlands on Sept. 21. Chapman defeated visiting Redlands 21-18 on Oct. 12 at Orange, California.

Linfield and Chapman had two other common opponents, and nearly identical scores. Pacific lost to Linfield 52-14 and to Chapman 45-14. Whitworth lost to Chapman 37-30.

College cross country: Linnaea Kavulich, a sophomore transfer from Portland State, ran eighth for Columbia as the No. 21-ranked Lions placed fourth in their Nov. 15 Northwest regional at Buffalo, New York. She finished the 6K race in 21 minutes, 29.8.

Harvard (92 points), Cornell (126) and Boston College (133) went 1-2-3. Columbia's 160 points easily outdistanced fifth-place Syracuse (203).

Columbia earned an at-large berth to the NCAA championships, which are Saturday at Terre Haute, Indiana.
