Playoff appearances highlight fall season
Another Scappoose football playoff appearance.
Ditto for St. Helens volleyball.
And for Scappoose girls soccer.
Also, up-and-coming cross-country runners at both schools, and some improving teams in soccer.
Those were among the highlights this fall in Indian and Lion sports.
The Scappoose football team made it to the Class 5A quarterfinals for the second year in a row at that level, and the Indians finished 7-4, knocking off Pendleton 23-14 at Round-Up Stadium in the first round of the postseason, after going 0-4 against the Buckaroos in previous games the past two seasons.
The St. Helens volleyball team was third in the Northwest Oregon Conference and made it back to the 5A playoffs as well.
Scappoose girls soccer was ranked fifth in the state when it lost 2-0 at No. 4 North Eugene in the state quarterfinals. The Indians went 11-4-1.
In boys cross country, St. Helens senior Waylon Nichols was third in the NWOC district meet race at Blue Lake Park, while sophomores Luke and Rowen Suchoski led the way for Scappoose. Rowen Suchoski placed seventh in the district meet, then was the top finisher at state for either the Indians or Lions, placing 26th in the 5A race at Lane Community College in Eugene.
In boys soccer, Scappoose posted a 2-3-2 league record, edging St. Helens 2-0 in their final game.
The Scappoose volleyball team missed the playoffs but had a league co-player of the year in senior outside hitter Darci DeTroy.
