Reigning short sprints champion hoping to defend NWOC district championships

PMG PHOTO: DARRYL SWAN - St. Helens girls track and field. In the eternal Columbia County arms race between St. Helens and Scappoose, the Lion girls' track team has the upper hand when it comes to explosive speed missiles.

Leading the brigade is junior sensation Savannah Moore, who won the 100-meter and 200 Northwest Oregon Conference sprint titles at the district championship meet last spring. Moore was the Lions' anchor in the 4x100 relay and the leadoff leg in the 4x400 relay, both of which took first place at the district meet. The swiftest young woman to roll through St. Helens in recent memory took fifth in the 200 at the Class 5A state championship meet. Sophomore Hannah Hayduk is a weapon as well, finishing second in the 200 and first in the 400 while running on both of the Lions' triumphant team relays. Hayduk took third in the 400 meters. Junior Isabella Nelson was fourth in the 100 at the district title meet and figures to take a spot on both relay teams this year. Senior Savannah Hoffman is a star jumper who won the high jump district championship to go along with a fifth-place finish in the triple jump and a sixth-place ribbon in the long jump. At the state meet, Hoffman finished in fifth place. Hayduk and Moore helped the Lions' 4x100 team place fourth in state.
