A heady turnout and eight returning players give the St. Helens girls golf team a pretty good start heading into the season.
The team has 17 girls out for golf and eight players who saw some varsity time last season, coach Jared Phillips said.
"Turnout for our girls golf program is outstanding this year," Phillips noted in an email to the Spotlight. "We have many of our JV players as well as some newcomers that will compete for the remaining varsity spots."
St. Helens was league co-champions with Wilsonville.
Sophomore Alexus Burgoyne led the team with a state tournament berth last season. Maddie Holm and Mackenzie Carlson return as two additional varsity contributors from last year. The fourth and fifth spots will be filled by returning jayvee players or perhaps some of the newcomers will step up.
Phillips said the girls have been working hard on their skills during their first two weeks of practice. The team is getting ready for their upcoming first match of the season with a non-counting Ice-Breaker Tournament at Charbonneau Golf Course in Wilsonville. The team will host its first league tournament on April 7 at Wildwood Golf Course.
The team practices at a range off Ross Road near Grace Baptist Church in St. Helens.
