April 28 meet brought St. Helens and Yamhill-Carlton high schools to Scappoose

PMG PHOTO: ANNA DEL SAVIO - Scappoose senior Gage Ekstrom leads in the last leg of the mens 4x400 relay.Scappoose and St. Helens high school track and field athletes faced off last week in the third meet of the season, with Yamhill-Carlton High School in the mix.

In the mens 4x400 meter relay, Griffin Barron, Jonathon Clothier, Gabe Jacobs and Gage Ekstrom from Scappoose took first place. A St. Helens quad, with Chayton Leake-Morrison, Cody Parnell, Colin Seeley and Noah Vanderzanden took second by just three seconds.

Ekstrom also took first in the 1,500-meter race.

Scappoose senior Andrew Morton made first place in the 3,000-meter run, coming in more than 2:50 faster than the second-place finisher, St. Helens junior Jose Ramirez. Morton shaved more than 30 seconds off his time from the week prior.

The Scappoose track and field team has a young team this season, giving underclassmen more opportunity. Freshmen took first in a number of contests; Peyton Lennox took first in the 400-meter race, Ellie Miller took first in varsity shot put and discus, and Megan Earl took first in javelin.

St. Helens senior Savannah Moore took first in the 100-meter and 200-meter.

Scappoose's winning womens relay teams both included two freshmen.

Scappoose took first in the womens 4x100 and 4x400, with both races including freshman Alice Davidson, senior Anika Havlik, and freshman Peyton Lennox. Sophomore Gabrielle Hanke joined the other three girls for the 4x100, while junior Sydney Hanke took on the 4x400.

The meet was the last before the county moved from "high risk" to "extreme risk," further limiting spectators for outdoor sports. Occupancy is limited for indoor and outdoor events. Spectators are theoretically required to check in at the entrance in case contact tracing is needed later on, though the check-in at the Scappoose meet was not manned and easy to slip past intentionally or unintentionally.

Though the first practice was barely a month ago, the spring season has just two weeks remaining, with culminating week May 17-22.PMG PHOTO: ANNA DEL SAVIO - St. Helens and Scappoose runners round the track at Scappoose High School at an April 28 meet.PMG PHOTO: ANNA DEL SAVIO - Scappoose senior Micah Swadley takes a close second in the 300-meter and 110-meter hurdles at an April 28 meet.PMG PHOTO: ANNA DEL SAVIO - A runner hands off the baton in the womens 4x400 relay.PMG PHOTO: ANNA DEL SAVIO - Scappoose senior Andrew Morton takes first in the mens 3,000-meter at a April 28 meet.
