Hops' Wombacher named MiLB Executive of the Year
Hillsboro Hops President and General Manager K.L. Wombacher was named Baseball America's Minor League Baseball's Executive of the Year Friday, Dec. 3.
The award – which was the first of its kind for Wombacher -- honors the top executive in all of minor league baseball and was announced alongside Major League Baseball's Executive of the Year, San Francisco Giants President of Baseball Operations Farhan Zaidi.
In the wake of the announcement, Wombacher thanked Baseball America for recognizing his, but more importantly his staff's work, along with the Arizona Diamondbacks organization and the Hops' owners Mike and Laura McMurray.
"Thank you to Baseball America for recognizing our organization with this incredible award," said Wombacher. "It is humbling to be noticed and this award belongs to our entire team who takes a ton of pride in their work and our community impact. We are fortunate to have amazing fans, a tremendous partner in the Arizona Diamondbacks, and most importantly an engaged and supportive ownership group led by Mike and Laura McMurray."Â
Wombacher oversaw the signing of a new 10-year Professional Development League agreement between the Hops and MLB in early 2021, that also included a jump up from the Short Season level of the minor leagues to High A. He also led the Hops organization out of a pandemic that saw the team lose the entire 2020 season. Additionally, the Hops President was instrumental in seamlessly welcoming the Vancouver Canadians to Hillsboro and Ron Tonkin Field for the 2021 season, which served as the home field for the NWL competitor due to complications stemming from Canada's border restrictions as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Hops President is also a key player in the organization and city of Hillsboro's proposal to upgrade Ron Tonkin Field in and effort to drive further revenue at the 10-year-old facility.
Wombacher began his career as an intern with the then Yakima Bears during the 2001 season, and after graduating from Central Washington University was the Director of Stadium Operations and Assistant General Manager before being promoted to General Manager in September of 2004.
