In order for your new orthodontic treatment to be effective, it's important for you to know how to properly care for your braces and teeth throughout your treatment. Avoid the following foods:
-Chewy foods — bagels, licorice
-Hard sticky foods — candies (Starburst, Tootsie Rolls), chewing gum
-Hard/crunchy foods — nuts, hard candies, ice
-Foods that require biting into — corn on the cob, apples and carrots (ok if sliced/cut into smaller pieces).
Will my teeth be sore? When you ?rst get your braces, you may notice that your teeth feel a little tender or sore. If your gums, lips or cheeks are sore, dissolve 1 tsp. of salt in eight ounces of lukewarm water. Swish and gargle for a couple of minutes (do not swallow). We provide wax that you can put over the braces to lessen the tenderness. If needed, take a pain reliever.
Loose elements-Wires and bands on your braces may come loose. Contact us as soon as possible so we can check and repair your appliance. If any piece comes off, save it and bring to our of?ce. You can temporarily ?x the loose wire by using the back of a spoon or a pencil eraser to gently push it back into place.
Sports-You can still play sports even while undergoing orthodontic treatment! I recommend wearing a mouth guard. We will help you ?nd the right one. Keep regular dental appointments for cleaning and exams. Don't hesitate to call with any questions or concerns about your new braces!
