Julian Thornton also recognized for portrayal of The Wizard, Santa Claus

Thorton (AKA King Richard) honored by city

Julian Thornton, better known to some as King Richard for his portrayal of the medieval ruler, was honored by the Sherwood City Council Nov. 19 for a variety of activities he’s done over the years to promote the GAZETTE FILE PHOTO: RAY PITZ - Julian Thornton, shown here in his study jammed with magical gear, was recently honored by the Sherwood City Council for all his civic involvement over the years.

Thornton, 73, was given a certificate of recognition by Mayor Bill Middleton for not only his King Richard persona at the annual Robin Hood Festival but for his portrayal of “The Wizard” and Santa Claus at local events as well.

“It really is an honor to give you a certificate for all you’ve done for the city,” said Middleton.

A former U.S. Navy petty officer during the Vietnam War, Thornton later worked as an engineer for Pacific Northwest Bell Telephone before retiring in 1990. A 46-year Sherwood resident, Thornton’s wife Alice also is involved in the Robin Hood Festival, having served with the organization for 37 years.
