All four of Sherwood High School’s ensembles finished the year by taking home first-place trophies.

Sherwood’s Winter Guard took first place on March 26 at Liberty High School in Hillsboro. They were soon followed by Sherwood Percussion Ensemble, Sherwood Cadet Percussion Ensemble and the Winter Winds Ensemble, who all clinched first-place victories on April 2 at West Salem High School.

“I am very proud of our Sherwood Band winter programs,” said Brant Stai, SHS band director.

“Our Percussion, Color Guard, and Winds performers each put in a lot of quality rehearsal time; our creative and instructional staff are very talented; and our parent boosters are incredibly supportive and dedicated. All these contributions led to our overall success and final placements. This is an absolute high for our winter programs.”

The ensembles, their designations, number of members and directors are as follows: Winter Guard/Scholastic AA Class, 11 members, directed by Amy Jack; Sherwood Percussion Ensemble/Scholastic A Class, 27 members, directed by Jeff Bush; Sherwood Cadet Percussion Ensemble/Cadet Class, 19 members, directed by Leila Hawana; and Sherwood Winter Winds/Scholastic A Class, 11 members, directed by Max Logan. This was the Winter Winds’ inaugural year in the NWAPA circuit.

The percussionists and color guard put in hundreds of hours of practice and dedication to the program.

“The season went really great,” said Bush “The community here in Sherwood and the families are just wonderful to work with. The season next year, we are going to do bigger and better things.”

Ilana L. Murray, secretary with the Sherwood Band Boosters, said the band boosters and parents wanted to congratulate all the students in the ensembles on their stellar season.

Meanwhile, Brett Bounpakob, a graduating senior who participated in the program, said the winter season changed dramatically since he first joined, noting that he was lucky to be surrounded by so many hardworking friends, parents and staff.

“They gave me a wonderful senior experience that I’ll remember forever,” he said. “I can’t wait to see what this program will accomplish in the future.”
