In Sherwood's historic Old Town, Christy and Shane Goodwin are the new kids on the block.
Over the Labor Day weekend, the two opened a new business, Cedar & Stone Home and Plant Shop.
It's a shop that has just about any gift item for your home and a variety of plants to enjoy throughout the year.
In describing their new business, located at 22540 S.W. Main St., Shane Goodwin said, "It's really a gift shop — We're not big enough to be much more than just home decor, plants and gifts."
There is a range of gift and plant ideas, according to Shane Goodwin, whose passion happens to be plants.
"We have cactus and succulents. We have indoor plants," he said, adding that more outdoor plants will be offered in the spring.
"I really love plants," Shane Goodwin said. "I enjoy outside plants, inside plants. Because of our lack of space here, we will have just ... a select group of plants. We'll change them out as we go so we don't get the same plants every single time. It's about getting fresh product and keeping it in here."
With the onset of fall and the cooler weather that accompanies it, Cedar & Stone Home and Plant Shop has tailored its offerings to indoor plants.
"This time of year, it will be all indoor plants," Shane Goodwin said. "As spring comes, we'll start using the little apron area out front — right now we have some winter vegetable starts — come spring, we'll have some heirloom-type product, from tomatoes to vegetables."
"We brought in some orchids from Hawaii," Christy Goodwin added.
The shop also includes home decor items, baby gifts, bird feeders and pet accessories. Vintage furniture will eventually be added to the store.
Other items include vases, baskets, containers and candles, as well as local hand-made cards.
"We do have some local hand-made items," Christy Goodwin said. "We've had artists who have come to us, whether it's lavender products (or) the crocheted pumpkins. We work with a local cut-flower farm. We're trying to have a good mix of those items."
The shop is also a great place for husbands who are in a hurry. As an example, two husbands recently shopped at the store for flowers, cards and gifts.
"Especially as a guy, we might not think ahead too far or plan ahead too far," Shane Goodwin admitted.
In the shop's baby section, Christy Goodwin said they've focused on making it as easy as possible for customers to find what they need quickly.
"I wanted to have a quick pick-up gift if you had a baby shower to go to. We've just added a personalized footprint kit," she said.
"Honestly, it's things that we get excited about, and we hope other people will too," Shane Goodwin said.
The Goodwins say that new gift items will be added to the store throughout the year, so when customers find that special accessory for their home, they might want to gobble it up right away.
Describing one row of merchandise in his store, Shane Goodwin said "This table has turned over quite a few times already just with the product that we have. (The idea) is to keep it fresh and give people a reason to come back in at least every week."
For those who visit the store frequently, they'll discover that the shop will adapt to the season.
"We're going to start with Christmas, probably this week, in the back," Shane Goodwin said. "Christmas will grow to be pretty much the whole store."
So far, business has been brisk at the Cedar & Stone Home and Plant Shop.
"We've found out about some plant lover groups that are in Sherwood," Christy Goodwin said. "People have been great about spreading the word and posting things (on social media). It's been a great start."
Shane and Christy Goodwin are also getting to know their Old Town neighbors during the process.
"We've been doing what we can to help out," Shane Goodwin said. "It's been fun."
Speaking of Old Town, Shane Goodwin said, "We love it. I love talking to people. People are so friendly."
