Tim Smith fills the position vacated by Amy Mitchell, who was recently selected to serve as principal at Hawks View Elementary. He's joining the administration led by principal Miranda Johnson.

Smith has logged nearly four decades of experience in education, including close to 30 years as an elementary principal.

According to the school district, Smith served 13 years in the Sherwood School District as principal at Middleton Elementary School, the former Hopkins Elementary School and, most recently, Archer Glen Elementary School.

Smith said he technically retired in June 2021, but has stayed active in the school district. He has been working most recently as a school custodian.

Contacted by the Gazette, Smith, who started his new job Monday, Sept. 12, said education is what he has always wanted to do.

"I love being a part of schools, the culture of schools, it's all I've really known," Smith said, noting that after serving as a custodian, he jumped at the opportunity to become associate principal. "This opportunity came up out of the blue."

Smith said his year outside of the main office, after retiring, was refreshing.

"I think the year away really refreshed my heart, soul, mind and body," Smith said. "I feel I'm in better shape. You put in a lot of steps as a custodian."

Smith continued, "I felt like, 'I could do this,' and it would be such a privilege to work under Miranda and to work alongside so many teachers, some of whom I did work with at the other elementaries over the 14 years or so that I served."

In a statement from the Sherwood School District, Johnson said Smith "has many years of administrative experience and will be a great asset to our school."

She added, "We are lucky to have him joining our team."

Smith has lived in the Sherwood community for the past 14 years with his wife Pamela and daughter Delaney, who is a Sherwood High School graduate.

Smith said, "It's just such a privilege that families give us to come alongside them, raising their children to be caring, contributing, thoughtful citizens. I'm just really honored and blessed."
