Kearsley: Chamber planning for awards, Vietnam vacation
The Sherwood Chamber of Commerce is looking forward to an exciting 2020!
In the fall, the Sherwood Foundation for the Arts wrapped up its production of "Annie." The entire cast and crew made a terrific run that resulted in sold-out shows.
One of my favorite lines in the musical comes from Daddy Warbucks, who quotes Calvin Coolidge, the 30th president of the United States: "The business of this country is business."
I would add that the backbone of Sherwood is business. Besides offering employment opportunities, they sponsor and participate in school, youth sports, art and other nonprofit programs, and they create and support fundraising events for needy causes. Without the business support, many of these organizations would not survive.
Now it's time that we as a community recognize our businesses for their contributions.
The Sherwood Chamber of Commerce is pleased to announce that the 21st annual awards dinner will take place on Thursday, Feb. 27, in the Tack Room at Langer's Entertainment Center.
Thanks to our title sponsor, Sentinel Self-Storage, Spotlight on Sherwood MVP honors will be awarded to the following:
• Large Business of the Year
• Small Business of the Year
• Rookie of the Year
• Citizen of the Year
• Business Leader of the Year
• Golden Apple Award
• Commitment to Youth Award
• Outstanding Community Service
• Outstanding Youth Award
• Coach of the Year
• Team Parent of the Year
Tickets are on sale now for $50. Seating is limited and we anticipate that the dinner will sell out. See sherwoodchamber.org for ticket information.
The Sherwood Chamber of Commerce is also excited to announce that its next travel and culture trip destination is Vietnam. Rising from the shadows of it 20th-century war-torn history, Vietnam is quietly emerging as a memorable, culturally enriching destination for travelers. LonelyPlanet.com describes it as: "A land of staggering natural beauty and cultural complexities, of dynamic megacities and hill-tribe villages, Vietnam is both exotic and compelling."
Departing Nov. 1 and returning Nov. 10 in 2020, the trip features stops in Hanoi, Halong Bay, Hoi An and Ho Chi Minh City (commonly known as Saigon). The $2,499 trip includes roundtrip airfare, four- and five-star hotel accommodations, three meals each day, English-speaking tour guides, and entrance fees to all attractions.
An informational meeting will take place on Thursday, Feb. 13, at the new chamber office located at 16273 S.W. Railroad St. in Old Town Sherwood. You can also visit sherwoodchamber.org for more information.
We hope to see you on the trip! Until then — be local. Shop local!
