Most pressing need is to honor high school seniors
We need to honor our Sherwood senior class.
That was the sentiment shared by the Sherwood Education Foundation board in the virtually held January board meeting.
For the last three years, Sherwood Education Foundation has achieved great success hosting the Sip and Spell event, an adult spelling bee featuring spellers such as local business owners, district employees and Sherwood community members.
Sponsors and live and silent auctions provided the foundation an opportunity to fund sizeable grants and scholarships to teachers and students throughout the district. Unfortunately, COVID-19 regulations continue to prohibit large gatherings, and as a result, the 2021 Sip and Spell has been cancelled.
The Sip and Spell event will return in 2022 and will remain a primary focus for the board.
For over 20 years, many individuals and local businesses have pledged generous support to the Sherwood Education Foundation and would like to give again in 2021.
After mentioning an opportunity to recognize seniors to former sponsors, it was clear there was strong support for this direction. While brainstorming ideas, one board member remarked that ultimately what all students, but especially seniors, are missing are experiences.
Our beautiful new high school sits quietly without students filling the halls. Seniors will not experience their final year of games, dances, theater performances, concerts and more. Nothing will be able to replace the loss of creating these memories, but as a foundation, we hope to find a way to honor the monumental accomplishment of completing primary education here in Sherwood.
