A church in Tigard is showcasing local artists in the community.

Through April, the Calvin Presbyterian Church will have a "Birds, Beasts and Burls" exhibit featuring three artists with varying mediums. The 30 pieces featured in the exhibit include works made of watercolors, oils and scrapped wood.

"Tigard does not have an art gallery," explained Dee Rommel, who is the church's gallery curator. "I considered this really sad for a long time. And being an artist, I felt like our church's main focus is to serve the community."

The exhibit will feature artist Mary Burgess who paints some of her animal subjects in watercolor pieces. Her work reflects the effect of light and shadow on various objects.

As for the second artist, Lorraine Bushek mainly works in oils via the gristle method. Bushek's art showcases her love of all animals while highlighting their gentle nature. The show will also feature Tom Willing, who transforms scrapped wood into beautiful pieces of art.

"It's just a good way to have another avenue for the artists to get their name out there and their work," said Rommel.

The church has been holding exhibits for artists in the area for close to two years. The gallery poses as a community outreach event for the church, said Rommel.

"Help educate the community artistically," she added, "to just beautify their lives a little bit by having a place to come."

On Sunday, March 8, the church will also hold a reception where people can purchase any of the pieces and talk to the artists firsthand. People can attend from 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. at Calvin Presbyterian Church, at 10445 S.W. Canterbury Lane in Tigard.

The cost of the event is free.
