Sherwood wrestlers living up to high expectations
The Sherwood High School wrestling team took high hopes into the 2019-20 season.
And, so far, the Bowmen are living up to those high expectations.
Sherwood moved to 4-1 in Pacific Conference dual matches by scoring a 62-12 win over McMinnville in a conference match held Jan. 30 at Sherwood High School. The 4-1 record puts the Bowmen alone in second place in the conference standings, behind only unbeaten Newberg.
"Newberg is the clear No. 1," Sherwood coach Jeff Wilson said in regard to the Pacific Conference this season. "If we wrestle well, we should finish second and challenge for top five at state."
The Bowmen certainly seem to have earned those high expectations, as they have a deep group of returnees from last year's squad. Among those returnees are junior Bryan Cuthbertson, who was the runner-up at 220 pounds at last year's Class 6A state tournament, and sophomore Ethan Ritchie, who placed sixth at 106 pounds.
Sherwood also returns senior Nick Hekker, senior Philip Resch, senior Logan Swanson, senior Ian Glenn, junior Malachi Tishendorf and senior Brody Stevens, who all qualified to wrestle at last year's Class 6A state tournament.
The Bowmen's loaded line-up could end up looking something like this, Ritchie at 106, Hekker at 113, junior Zach Coenen at 120, Swanson at 132, Resch and junior Dallen Jolley at 132 or 138, senior Abrahm Nelson and Tishendorf at 145, sophomore Seth Glenn, Stevens and Sam Fangon at 152 or 160, Ian Glenn at 182, junior Ashton Sarono-Ramos at 195, Cuthbertson at 225 and seniors Nick Severson and Dominic Wyncoop at 285.
Hekker, Resch, Cuthbertson and Jolley are serving as team captains.
"Between 132 and 160, we're strong and deep," Wilson said. "We also have a good group at 220 and at heavyweight."
Wilson added that Nelson, Fangon and Wyncoop have been much improved this season.
In the victory over McMinnville, Ritchie (106 pounds), Hekker (113), Resch (145), Nelson (152), Stevens (170) and Cuthbertson all won by fall. Ritchie had the fastest win, pinning McMinnville's Cameron Anderson in a time of 30 seconds. Hecker, Resch, Nelson and Cuthbertson also had first-round pins.
Swanson got a major decision at 132. Seth Glenn won by major decision at 160. Ian Glenn (182) and Sarono-Ramos (195) got decision victories. Coenen (120) and Jolley (138) won by forfeit.
The Bowmen will finish their Pacific Conference dual match schedule on Thursday, when they host Glencoe. Varsity bouts are set to start at 7 p.m. On Saturday, Sherwood will compete at the Silverton Dual Tournament, to be held at Silverton High School.
