In the absence of a traditional high school state championship tournament, 32 boys basketball teams and 32 girls basketball teams, mostly from Class 6A and 5A schools, will spend the last week of their 2021 season competing in eight-team mini-tournaments.
Each field is divided into four eight-team brackets for the competition that is scheduled to happen Tuesday, June 22 through Thursday, June 24. Decisions about the number of spectators allowed are expected by the end of this week, and capacity might vary by venue.
Tournament organizer Jeff Peeler, an assistant athletic director for the PIL, emphasized that these are not state championship events. The focus was to create competitive games. Input from coaches helped form the eight-team brackets. Every team will play three games; each bracket will feature four games per day.

Bonus tournament planned — A few high school boys basketball teams will extend their season beyond next week at a non-OSAA tournament to be held June 28 to July 1 at The Performance Athletic Center in Salem.
Called Oregon Madness, the event is aiming for 16 teams from every classification. As of June 16, participating teams included Grant and De La Salle North Catholic from Portland and Westside Christian of Tigard. Other participating Class 6A teams are Sprague, West Salem, North Medford and South Medford, as well as Class 5A Lebanon, Class 4A Woodburn, Class 3A Yamhill-Carlton and Jefferson and Class 1A Butte Falls and Nixyaawii.
Organizers hope to add teams to fill out a complete 16-team bracket.
One of the organizers is Brant Minor, an assistant coach at Pacific University, who said his goal was to create an experience similar to the 16-team state basketball tournaments he played in for Grants Pass High in the early 2000s. He said the plan to also stage a girls tournament were put on hold until 2022 because of scheduling challenges.
