The Sherwood Bowmen football team lost four straight games to start the year. What did they do beyond that? Won seven straight, a league title, and two state playoff games before losing to eventual state champion Central Catholic in the quarterfinals.
"We found out a lot about ourselves since those first four games," Sherwood head coach Kevin Hastin said following their regular season finale. "We had a tough schedule and some tough injuries, but we fought through and just stayed positive."
It was that level of fortitude, along with some pretty good football that landed the first-year head coach's group a league-leading 10 first team All-Pacific Conference selections on this year's list of all-stars, and Hastin the league's Coach of the Year honor.
In all, Sherwood took 10 spots on the first team, followed by Liberty and Newberg with seven apiece.
Top individual honors went to Hastin (Coach of the Year), Newberg's Hudson Davis who took home Defensive Player of the Year, Liberty's Ryan Berger and Sherwood's Trent Hodney who were Co-Offensive Lineman of the Year, Newberg's Kyle Kelley who was the Defensive Lineman of the Year, and Liberty quarterback Hiro Diamond who was the Offensive Player of the Year.
Diamond was exceptional as a true dual threat, completing nearly 60 percent of his passes while throwing for 1,739 yards and 20 touchdowns. Additionally, the senior carried 201 times for 1,422 yards and 25 touchdowns.
Other Liberty first-teamers included Ethan Jones who earned honors at both receiver and defensive back, offensive linemen Elijah Markowitz and Ryan Berger, defensive lineman Patrick Wooley, and linebacker Cade Hammond who led the team with 82 tackles while tallying two sacks and two interceptions.
Of Sherwood's 10 first-teamers, three were offensive linemen Hodney, Nathan Fillinger-Palotay, and Alex Armas, sophomore kick returner Nolen Scott, defensive lineman Oliver Fisher, Seth Glenn at both linebacker and running back, defensive backs Bjorn Bergstrom and Chase highberger, along with receiver Cody Hall who caught 72 passes for 1,333 yards and 20 touchdowns, averaging 133 yards receiving per game.
Glenn too was impressive, rushing for 1,396 yards and 21 touchdowns, while accumulating 32 tackles and four interceptions on defense.
Glencoe's four first teamers consisted of just two players, with Zack Schlottman earning honors at both defensive line and tight end, while Royce Fasel did the same at running back and linebacker.
Fasel was decorated at running back despite playing from the quarterback position for the bulk of the season. He tallied 1,781 yards and 22 touchdowns on the ground, averaging 198 yards per game. The senior also led his team in tackles, amassing 63 with 8.5 for a loss.
Schlottmann was the Tide's leading receiver from his tight end position, catching 31 balls for 611 yards and three touchdowns. He was also second to Fasel in tackles, totaling 59.
Century garnered no first team selections but had six players earn second team honors led by senior receiver Jalen Ellis who caught 58 balls for 729 yards and three touchdowns.
