The U.S. Senate on Wednesday approved the creation of a 30,500-acre Devil’s Staircase Wilderness through a unanimous consent motion. The wilderness area is located roughly 10 miles north of Reedsport in Oregon’s Coast Range, named after a series of stair-step waterfalls carved into the bedrock of Wasson Creek.

The land was designated for inclusion in a 1984 Oregon wildnerness package, but stripped out during negotiations over that bill.

“It’s like something you’d find in Olympic National Park,” says Tommy Hough, communications and outreach associate for Oregon Wild.

The Senate approval also would designate 14 miles of the Wasson and Franklin creeks as wild and scenic rivers.

The bill has not yet been introduced into the U.S. House of Representatives, where it figures to face more formidable obstacles to passage.
