Walmart will unveil what’s billed as the largest green roof in the city of Portland when it opens its new store near Delta Park next month.

Nearly half the Walmart Supercenter’s 92,000-square-foot roof will be covered in vegetation and sediment, which will help cool the store and manage storm water.

Green roofs also extend the lifetime of a roof, create habitat for birds, and help reduce the urban heat island effect caused by a preponderance of buildings, concrete and asphalt in urban areas.

Students at Portland State University’s Green Building Research Laboratory will use the project as part of a two-year study. Students, under the direction of PSU professor David Sailor, will test the results from three slightly different segments of the green room, as well as the white membrane on the remaining part of the roof, and compare the results to Walmart's experience at a Chicago store with a green roof.

The Portland Bureau of Environmental Services will measure stormwater runoff at the site.

The new store is located at 1123 Hayden Meadows Drive. It’s the second Walmart to be located inside the city of Portland, joining an existing store on Southeast 82nd Avenue.
