The Power Past Coal coalition is holding a People’s Hearing on Coal Export on Saturday, March 8 in downtown Portland.

The event is slated from noon to 2 p.m. at Pioneer Courthouse Square.

The rally comes as the Oregon Division of State Lands considers Ambre Energy’s request for a removal fill permit for its Morrow Pacific coal export facility, which hopes to ship Powder River coal on barges through the Columbia River Gorge, bound for Asia.

The company recently won three permits for the project from the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality, although DEQ also decided to require a fourth permit for water quality, which may be a higher hurdle for Ambre Energy.

Citizens are invited to provide “testimony” about the Ambre project, and to wear red to protest coal exports through the Northwest.

The event will include live music by Counterfeit Cash.
