The Save Endangered Animals Oregon coalition said it turned in more than 150,000 petition signatures on Thursday to quality a ballot initiative for Oregons November ballot. The initiative would ban the sale in Oregon of products and parts from sea turtles, sharks, rays, elephants, rhinos, cheetahs and other critically threatened or endangered species.
Chief sponsors of the measure include U.S. Rep. Earl Blumenauer, D-Portland, and Bruce Starr, a former Republican state senator from Hillsboro. Endorsers include the Oregon Zoo Foundation, Oregon Coast Aquarium and other local and national conservation and animal-rights groups.
Oregonians do not want to partake in the shameful wildlife trade that incentivizes poaching cruelty and pushes many beloved wild animals to the brink of extinction, said Kristin Leppert, campaign director, in a news release. We look forward to passing this landmark conservation measure in November.
