Want to live large but build small?
Thinking about adding an accessory dwelling unit to your lot?
Build Small, Live Large, the annual tour of Portland accessory dwelling units, lets people tour newish ADUs to get design ideas and talk to the pros in the field. Buildings, designers and homeowners also will be on hand to answer questions.
On Saturday, Sept. 9, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., participants can take a self-guided tour to any of a dozen ADUs in Northeast Portland. There will be a party at Caravan, the Tiny House Hotel, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.
On Sunday, Sept. 10, the self-guided tour continues from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Southeast Portland, where another dozen ADUs will be featured.
The mix includes detached new construction, converted garages, ADUs built above garages or workshops, and a couple basement conversions.
Each ADU is different from the rest, to maximize the opportunities for design inspiration.
There also will be an ADU workshop on Friday, Sept. 8, on how to get started with permitting, financing and design, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. That will be presented by Kol Peterson, a consultant for ADUs, co-owner of Caravan, and host of the accessory dwellings.org blog.

The tour is sponsored by Caravan, in partnership with accessorydwellings.org, Metro, the Portland Bureau of Planning and Sustainability, Energy Trust of Oregon and Earth Advantage.
