MORE STORIES

Grow Portland offers introductory classes for those who want to learn the art of seed sharing.

PAMPLIN MEDIA GROUP FILE PHOTO - Candice Haster, the Youth Grow Coordinator for Growing Gardens, hands out seeds to students in the summer garden program at Earl Boyles Elementary School. Grow Portland is offering classes on how to share seeds.
Why buy seeds from the store when you can collect them from plants already in your garden?

Grow Portland is leading an educational class about how to save seeds at libraries around the area. At the event, guests will be shown how to plant their gardens for successful seed harvesting, tools and equipment for cleaning seeds, and seed storage tips. They'll also learn about types of seeds, and about opportunities for seed sharing.

According to Grow Portland, seed saving helps improve the flavor of locally grown produce, as well as lower the cost of gardening. The organization is currently working on a collection of seeds, kept in a library at their office. The seeds will be shared with educational gardeners, local non-profits, and the public at Grow Portland's annual seed-sharing event in January for National Seed-Swap Day. Oral histories about the seeds donated will be recorded to honor the families saving the seeds.

Grow Portland is a non-profit that hopes to engage more folks in urban food production. They also often offer free gardening classes, as well as resources and information to help gardeners. They are also interested in interviewing gardeners who have saved special seeds so that they can record histories about the seeds and the gardeners who saved them. Grow Portland will share some of these stories for the public to hear.
