Joseph Furia named executive director of Portland nonprofit, just as it prepares to host 14th-annual conference

COURTESY WORLD FORESTRY CENTER  - Joseph Furia is the new executive director of the nonprofit World Forestry Center in Portland. The World Forestry Center on Tuesday announced the appointment of Joseph Furia as its new executive director.

Furia, 41, is a lawyer with experience in business, public policy and nonprofit management, including marketing and business development for technology and hybrid-electric vehicle companies.

Founded in 1966, the World Forestry Center is a nonprofit dedicated to educating the public about forestry, innovations and related fields. It's located at Portland's Washington Park near the Oregon Zoo, where it operates the World Forest Institute and Discovery Museum and event space. It also brings together forestry professionals to advance research, networking and informational exchanges.

The World Forestry Center touts its dedication to sustainable forestry, and has recently added new ecological services products, such as water quality management and carbon sequestration.

Furia begins work as the organization prepares to host its14th annual Who Will Own the Forest? conference, which runs Sept. 25-27 in Portland. Visit www.wwotf.org for more information.
