Pacific Power will provide new "smart meters" for its Portland-area and other Oregon customers, enabling residential and business customers to monitor their power usage hour-by-hour and enabling them to adjust their electricity usage to reduce bills and carbon emissions.
Some 78,000 new meters will be installed for Portland-area customers, starting Jan. 28 and lasting through June. Throughout 2019, the Portland-based utility expects to replace a total of 590,000 meters statewide.
The smart meters will track power outages, meaning power can be restored sooner. Businesses will get detailed usage reporting to help them cut costs. The smart meters also will enable Pacific Power's grid to work more efficiently and integrate renewable power sources.
Customers will get notified about the planned installations in advance, via the mail. Pacific Power technicians will remove the old meters and replace them, requiring a power outage of less than five minutes.
Customers can sign into their Pacific Power accounts about six weeks after installation, to access the newly available usage data.
