City Council votes unanimously for resolution designed to send message to Trump Administration

FILE PHOTO - A surfer heads out to catch waves off the Oregon Coast. The Portland City Council unanimously approved a resolution Wednesday opposing oil and gas drilling and exploration off the shores of Oregon.

"The city of Portland finds that offshore oil and gas drilling, gas exploration, and offshore fracking and other well stimulation unnecessarily risks the Oregon Coast's economic and ecological health, and therefore opposes any current or future plan or legislation that encourages any oil and gas development, exploration, or fracking," the resolution states.

The measure, along with a proposed bill making its way through the Oregon Legislature, is a message to the Trump Administration signaling the city's position against the president's move to open up offshore oil drilling on the West Coast. Lawmakers, if they approve Senate Bill 256, would put an executive order by Gov. Kate Brown into state law.

While there have been new oil leases in federal waters off the Pacific Coast since 1984, a recent Trump Administration proposal called for seven leases to be issued in the next five years, six off California and one off Oregon and Washington, according to Oceana, an environmental group dedicated to protecting ocean ecology.

The Portland City Council resolution was promoted by city Commissioner Amanda Fritz, who worked with Oceana and The Surfrider Foundation to press the issue.
