The Memorial Day event was held at Fir Hill Cemetery on Highway 26 in Sandy. About 60 people attended.

Members of the Sandy Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4273 and the public paid their respects on Memorial Day for the countless men and women who served — and sometimes died — to protect American freedoms.

Under a blue sky, with American flags bustling in a light breeze, about 60 people gathered at Fir Hill Cemetery on Highway 26 on Monday, May 28.

SANDY POST: STEVEN BROWN - JoAn Gunderson lays a flower on the grave of her husband, Alan Gunderson, who lived his entire life in Sandy except the four years he served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. Gunderson was represented at the event by his wife, JoAn Gunderson, who described the tribute to her husband as simply "wonderful."

Alan Gunderson lived his entire life in Sandy except for the four years he served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. He was a past commander of the Sandy VFW Post (in the 1980s) and was a bugler for the post for 15 years, playing for VFW events and at the funerals of fellow veterans. He also recorded the wake-up and lights-out call for Oral Hull Park.

Among the veterans who attended the event were Robert "Tony" Gibler, a former post commander, and a Navy veteran who served during Desert Shield, Desert Storm and the liberation of Kuwait; and John D. Taylor II, a member of the Sandy Lions Club who spent six years of active service with the U.S. Air force, and more than 23 years in the Reserve and National Guard.
