First-time event connects citizens, law enforcement officers in community event

PMG FILE PHOTO - The purpose of National Night Out on Aug. 6 is to increase crime prevention and community involvement with police. It's the goal of the Sandy Police Department to constantly be ensuring that Sandy and its citizens are as safe as possible. But, Chief Ernie Roberts would argue that the department can't do it alone.

In an effort to increase crime prevention and get the community more involved with and knowledgeable of its police department, Roberts and his staff will host Sandy's first National Night Out from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 6. For one night, residents are asked to lock their doors, turn on their porch lights and join members of the Sandy Police Department, Clackamas County Sheriff's Office and Oregon State Police and other community members outside.

Activities will be hosted at St. Michael's Catholic Church, 18090 S.E. Langensand Road; Barlow Ridge Park, 38616 Barlow Pkwy; Sandy Bluff Park, 36910 Goldenrain St., and within the Hood Chalet Mobile Home Park at Bluff Road and Strawbridge Parkway.

Thousands of other cities already participate in the national effort.

"We've wanted to do this, but we didn't have the resources before," Roberts noted. "Not because of finances, but because of manpower."

He added that the event is fairly low-cost and the focus is mainly to create an opportunity for facetime between citizens and Sandy's police officers.

"We sometimes get caught up in our jobs and so busy and get questions about what we do," Roberts said. "We want people to know what our mission is and what we're doing to help them."

The event is largely run by volunteers, including a handful of local churches, and will include activities in local parks and neighborhoods.

The police department will also offer outdoor blue lights for purchase at a discounted rate.

The blue lights are a way for residents to signal their support for law enforcement. The department will sell 102 lights for $5 each on a first-come-first-serve basis. They will be available at the police department up to the event date, during regular office hours from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday.

"Even though we got a bit of a late start on this, we felt like it was important to make this event happen," Roberts noted. "We want people to feel comfortable with their officers and contacting us. It's never a bother when they call. It's our job to respond."
