Planning is under way for the 65th annual Sandy Community Christmas Basket Program sponsored by the Sandy Kiwanis Club. Monetary donations will help the club fill baskets for those who request them.

FILE PHOTO: PAMPLIN MEDIA - Planning is under way for the 65th annual Sandy Community Christmas Basket Program sponsored by the Sandy Kiwanis Club.

Last year — with community donations — the service club assisted 300 families in the community with baskets filled with food and toys.

This year will be different with the continuing COVID-19 pandemic. In previous years, area schools provided canned foods gathered during an annual can food drive, and the Sandy Kiwanis purchased fresh food, meat and additional canned goods that are included in each box. With schools utilizing distance learning the canned food drive has been canceled.

This Kiwanis will purchase all the food for the Christmas Basket Program, and are in needed of monetary contributions from businesses and community members.

To help purchase food, the Kiwanis are asking that donors consider sponsoring the cost of one Christmas Box, valued at $50. Donations can be made online.

The donations also can be sent to Sandy Community Christmas Baskets, P.O. Box 1261, Sandy, Ore., 97055.

The Sandy Fire District processes applications for Christmas Box requests. Recipients must reside within the boundaries of the Sandy Fire District.

Applications can be submitted Nov. 29, through Dec. 17. To complete an application, visit the Sandy Fire District website.

Because of COVID-19, there are no in-person applications.

Those who need help filling out an application may call the Sandy Fire District at 503-668-8093.

New toys are being collected and donated by several local businesses and organizations. Anyone who wants to donate gifts can take them to the Sandy Fire District, Geren's Farm Supply, Berkshire Hathaway Real Estate, Sandy Branch of Clackamas County Bank, Grocery Outlet, Suburban Auto, Mt .Hood Athletic Club, Sandy Les Schwab Tire and Caliber Home Mortgage. The Kiwanis ask that gifts be new and unwrapped, or in the form of a gift card for teens.

"We really would like to thank the businesses and community members that have supported this program over the years," said co-chair Martin Montgomery. "This program would not be as successful without the help of local volunteers and partners in the community."
