All transit service is canceled, major roadways are closed. and hundreds of thousands are without power.

A dangerous mix of snow and ice hammered much of the region late Friday and early Saturday, forcing TriMet to cease operations, as well as shut down many roads, and knock out power for hundreds thousands of people. Mass vaccination clinics were also canceled for Saturday and Sunday in Portland.

A Winter Storm Warning remaining in effect at least through 4 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 13.

Early Saturday morning, TriMet announced that all MAX and bus service has been temporarily suspended until further notice due to the weather conditions, including LIFT paratransit service. Portland Streetcar service was halted Friday. The Oregon Department of Transportation has closed Interstate 84 in the Columbia Gorge, and the Portland Bureau of Transportation has closed Marine Drive. Many other streets in Portland were also closed because of slick conditions and chains are required in certain spots.

"We are working to restore service as soon as it safe to do so," a TriMet spokesperson said. "We ask riders for their patience and understanding, as this is for their safety and the safety of our employees."

"Please do not travel, unless for emergencies; It is too dangerous out there," the spokeswoman continued.

Many flights were also delayed or canceled at Portland International Airport.

As of 5 a.m., Saturday, Portland General Electric reported more than 224,000 people had power issues. Pacific Power reported more than 42,000 people were powerless at that time, as well.

More snow and freezing rain could return Saturday morning and afternoon, adding to the problems.

Emergency severe weather and warming shelters will likely remain open at least through Sunday. More than 300 beds are available at the following three locations:

• Oregon Convention Center, 965 N.E. First Ave., open until 8 a.m. Friday.

• Metro Garage, 578 N.E. Irving St., open 24 hours.

• Arbor Lodge Severe Weather Shelter, 1952 N. Lombard St., open until 8 a.m. Friday.

Transportation officials are urging everyone to stay home.

County spokesman Mike Pullen reported that sections of four Multnomah County roads were closed due to the winter storm.

"Road crews are plowing snow that is three to six feet high in the Corbett area in rural east county," he said. "Please avoid driving in the Corbett area today while our crews work on snow removal."

The closed roads are:

• Corbett Hill Road, a steep road that connects I-84 with the Historic Columbia River Highway;

• NE Marine Drive from Sundial Road to Frontage Road, due to stalled vehicles on an icy road with strong gusts blowing;

• NE 238th Drive from Arata Rd. to Glisan St. due to ice on the steep hill;

• NW Brooks Rd. from NW Skyline Blvd. to NW Kaiser Rd. due to a downed tree in power lines.
