Sandy High, Sandy Grade schools see shifts in leadership
As the end of the 2020-21 school year approaches, the Oregon Trail School District has announced shifts in leadership at Sandy High and Sandy Grade schools.
At Sandy Grade, former Principal Dr. Rachael George has moved to the district administrative position of director of student services. To fill her shoes at the grade school, Cassiday Hopkins has accepted the position of principal. Hopkins served as the school's Title I teacher, starting in August 2015, before taking on the role of interim principal in January. Hopkins has been an elementary school educator for 17 years and has taken on leadership roles throughout her career.
"I love the Sandy Grade community," Hopkins said. "I feel like I'm right where I'm supposed to be."
After eight years as principal of Sandy High School, Principal Kim Ball has accepted the district position of curriculum and instruction administrator. Vice Principal Sarah Dorn has since accepted the position of interim Sandy High principal.
Ball started in the Oregon Trail School District as a teacher in 1997, serving at several district schools over the years.
"During her tenure, graduation rates and state assessment scores have increased dramatically," district representatives said in a statement. "In her new role as the curriculum and instruction administrator, (Ball's) initial project will be coordinating the district's first K-12 summer school program."
"I have treasured the eight years I have spent as Sandy High's principal," Ball explained. "I am proud of the hard work by our staff that has led to tremendous gains for our students. I look forward to new challenges and being able to support students and staff at a different level."
Dorn became a vice principal at Sandy High in 2019.
"Sarah came to Oregon Trail with a wealth of knowledge in curriculum and has spent her time at Sandy High as an integral part of the administrative team supporting curriculum, student behavior, and as the Leadership teacher," Ball said, adding that she has the utmost confidence in Dorn taking over as principal.
"I am blessed to work alongside an amazing staff every day," Dorn explained. "We will remain focused on graduating every student by providing them with quality instruction, respect, and care. It is an honor to serve this community."
Dorn's vice principal position will be filled by Maria O'Meara in an interim capacity.
O'Meara has worked for Oregon Trail since 2012, and serves as a special education coordinator.
"Her expertise working with families and staff to develop Individual Education Plans (IEPs) for students with disabilities will be a valuable asset to the Sandy High leadership team," explained district representatives.
"I am super excited about joining the high school team and working with a great staff," O'Meara said. "I look forward to working with everyone to help students continue to grow in their education."
Hopkins, Ball, Dorn and O'Meara will formally begin their new roles effective July 1, 2021.
"Over the years OTSD has been very fortunate to have had the opportunity to hire many great educators. In doing so we are able to help them grow and leverage their skill set to continue advancing our collective cause," Superintendent Aaron Bayer said. "I couldn't be (prouder) of the dedication, hard work, and collective skill these administrators possess. I have the utmost confidence all will be highly successful in these new roles and continue to build on the amazing growth our district has seen over the last decade."
