Often, when people are low on funds, things like regular visits to the dentist are one of the first things to be postponed for the sake of putting food on the table.Â
After a year when many experienced a hit to their family income, Tami Beaty says, the Sandy Seventh-day Adventist Church's free dental clinic is made even more critical.
To meet this need, church volunteers and medical professionals will host the annual clinic from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 3, at the church, 18575 S.E. Langensand Road.Â
Those in need of care from the areas of Sandy, the Mount Hood communities, Boring, Eagle Creek and Estacada are welcome to attend.Â
"I think this is especially important because, with COVID and what we've been through in the past almost two years, there's a need now more than ever for free dental care," said volunteer event coordinator Tami Beaty. "I think when people are in need, that money tends to go elsewhere."Â
People are encouraged to show up to the church early that Sunday to allow time to screen for COVID symptoms, access the needs of those in attendance, and efficiently care for as many patients as possible. People who need crowns or teeth replacements are especially asked to arrive as early as 7 a.m. to ensure they can be seen.Â
Those experiencing COVID symptoms are asked not to attend, and masking will be required while patients are not receiving care in accordance with the current state mandate. Dental stations will also be spaced out as a precaution.Â
"We've thought through everything," Beaty explained. "We're trying to be really cautious about everything and careful."Â
Professionals will offer free dental x-rays, cleanings, fillings and extractions, as well as limited replacements.Â
These clinics provide dental care free of charge to 100-115 people every year and provide access to a free meal. For those at the clinic in the morning, breakfast items will be available. Then around noon, the volunteers will provide lunch. Drinking water will also be provided.Â
"I'm hoping we reach the people who really need this service," Beaty said. "We are really excited for this year's clinic and looking forward to helping our community."
In conjunction with the clinic, volunteers will host a drop or swap event downstairs in the church from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 3, offering children's clothing items for infants to teens, books, toys and shoes, as well as an assortment of adult clothing. Those who wish to attend can come solely to receive clothing free of charge or bring lightly used donations to swap for new-to-you items.Â
