Sandy nonprofit for those with low, no vision seeks donations with GoFundMe effort

PMG FILE PHOTO: BRITTANY ALLEN - The Hull Foundation and Learning Center has offered services for those living with vision loss from all over the world since 1962. The pandemic has meant a drop in revenue for many companies, organizations and even municipalities. Hull Foundation and Learning Center for the Blind in Sandy, which offers resources and retreats for those with low to no vision, was not immune from this negative impact over the past nearly two years.

As a multi-faceted organization, the foundation offers not only workshops and resources for people living with vision loss but rents out their facilities to the public.

"We have always relied on members, generous donors and park facility rentals to support our programs to serve blind and visually impaired adults," said Kerith Vance, executive director of the foundation. "During the last two years we missed out on more than $250,000 of rental income due pandemic to restrictions. However, our demand for services has not decreased so we decided to reach out to a wider audience."

In an attempt to recoup some of these revenue losses, Vance said the foundation has launched a GoFundMe campaign.

The foundation hopes to raise more than $30,000 in its GoFundMe campaign by Dec. 31, to offset the costs of its programs and services including Zoom workshops, Peer-to-Peer Support calls and overnight seminars. The organization is a non-profit 501c3 organization with limited paid staff and as such doesn't receive government funding to support programs or services.

"Whether blind at birth or later in life as the result of illness, accident, or aging, blindness imposes new challenges to everyday life," Vance explained. "There is a need for new ways of accomplishing everyday tasks. There is also a need for a sense of community, encouragement and independence."
