Prestige-owned theater to host free movies, games, food drive for community May 16

PMG FILE PHOTO - To celebrate 20 years in Sandy, the staff at Sandy Cinemas plans to host a special evening of entertainment at 6 p.m. Monday, May 16. To celebrate 20 years in Sandy, the staff at Sandy Cinemas plans to host a special evening of entertainment at 6 p.m. Monday, May 16. For one night only, the cinema at 16605 Champion Way will close for regular business and bring back two movies from the early 2000's — "Shrek" and "The Fast and the Furious" — for special viewing. Admission for the movies will be on a first come first serve with the donation of a nonperishable food item for the Sandy Community Action Center.

Representatives from the Sandy Chamber of Commerce will facilitate a ribbon cutting with President and CEO of Prestige Theatres, Elie Kassab, outside preceding the doors opening for movies at 6 p.m.

"Former Mayor Linda Malone and then-City Manager Scott Lazenby told us in 2001 that the majority of the 2,368 middle and high schoolers then enrolled in the Oregon Trail School District's number one request was to bring a movie theater to the city of Sandy to enhance and provide family entertainment," said Kassab. "When large movie chains declined, we built it and have been operating Sandy Cinema since it opened in 2002."

Besides these special showings, the cinema will also host a raffle, family friendly activities, games and contests and an on-site food drive.

The Sandy Community Action Center is in most need of jam/jelly, chunky soups, canned corn, and pre-mades like Hamburger Helper, etc.

"The 20 years went by really fast—we are proud to be a member of the Sandy Area Chamber of Commerce and the Sandy community," Kassab said.
