'A Christmas Carol' to open at Sandy Actors Thanksgiving weekend, Friday, Nov. 25

Many know the Charles Dickens' story of the miserly businessman who is visited by spirits that try to motivate him to reconsider his selfish ways, but have you heard it performed in the style of an old-time radio play?

This holiday season, Sandy Actors Theatre will premiere their live on stage radio play of "A Christmas Carol," as adapted by Joni Tabler and Curt Hanson.

This is the third, and potentially final, in a series of seasonal radio plays SAT has produced, following performances of "It's a Wonderful Life" and "Miracle on 34th Street."

"A Christmas Carol" opens at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 25, but there will be a preview night performance following a reception for the Wy'East Artisans Guild at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 22. The preview night tickets are only $10. The show runs through Sunday, Dec. 18.

"The timing is good," said Tabler. "We get really good audiences (for our seasonal productions). Everyone's in the holiday spirit."

"It's a great story," explained director Cheryl Rudarmel-Beam. "When it was written, it was not a hit. It's a morality play and it's a thriller."

Rudarmel-Beam added that the show is not only seasonally appropriate but continues year after year to be socially relevant.

"Sometimes we don't realize our actions affect other people," she said. "It's a play to make people stop and consider."

As a radio play on the stage, the SAT production has numerous levels to keep it entertaining, and unique to the theater. Each actor is actually playing a 1940s radio actor, playing their character(s) in "A Christmas Carol."

"It's kind of fun," Rudarmel-Beam said.

Concessions will be offered for purchase before the show and during intermission. In the spirit of the play, and the holiday season, SAT will also be taking nonperishable food donations for the Sandy Community Action Center. Please make sure any donated items have a good sell-by date before gifting.

Tickets are $18 for adults, $13 for children and $15 for veterans, first responders, students and senior citizens.
