Nonprofit sponsors 67th program to make Christmas for families in need within Sandy Fire District

PMG FILE PHOTO: BRITTANY ALLEN - After donations are collected, members of the Sandy Kiwanis Club and volunteers gather to compile baskets and prepare them for families. Donations are being collected once again by the Sandy Kiwanis Club to provide hundreds of area families in need with a Christmas to remember.

This will be the 67th year the club has sponsored its Sandy Community Christmas Basket Program, gathering and delivering toys and food to more than 300 families.

As in other years the Sandy Kiwanis will be purchasing the fresh food, meat and basic canned goods that are included in each basket. Oregon Trail school leadership clubs have traditionally helped collect and donate canned food to help round out the boxes.

That said, the club is asking that people consider sponsoring a family to help Kiwanians purchase food. The cost for one Christmas Box is approximately $50. Donations can be made online at sandykiwanis.org/ChristmasBasket.html. You can also write a check and mail it to:

"Monetary donations from businesses and community members will be essential this year to fill the gap left by ever-increasing cost of food and toys," said Martin Montgomery, co-chairperson of the project.

The Sandy Fire District will only process the applications for those Christmas Baskets requests residing in the Sandy Fire District. Beginning Monday, Nov. 28, through Dec. 15, applications can be completed by visiting the Sandy Fire District website at sandyfire.org. If you require assistance filling out an application, you are encouraged to call the Sandy Fire District at 503-668-8093.

New toys are being collected and donated by several local businesses and organizations. Anyone wishing to donate gifts can take them to the following locations:

  • Sandy Fire District, 17460 Bruns Ave., Sandy
  • Geren's Farm and Landscape Supply, 33680 S.E. Kelso Road, Boring
