Letter writer Lila Leathers of Fairview says the actions by Sen. Chuck Thomsen protected Oregonians from a steep rise in fuel costs.

Thank you, Sen. Thomsen for walking out of the 2020 legislative session and fighting for my right to vote on SB 2020 cap-and-trade.

I know you had to walk out because there was no other way for you to represent me and all your other constituents. You were simply outnumbered by the Democrats in the Senate.

I know you to be a genuinely sincere, hardworking man who takes his job in the Senate very seriously.

Sen. Laurie Monnes-Anderson also held out for Oregonians when she refused to vote for this same bill in the 2019 session. I also wish to thank her for standing up against this truly costly, unnecessary bill.

Last year state analysts quoted a raise of 21 cents per gallon in the first year of the program. This year SB2020 is quoting the gas price to raise 72 cents per gallon. What will the true cost be? You saved all Oregonians an estimated immediate raise in gas prices of at least 72 cents per gallon. I firmly believe the raise will be well over $1 per gallon.

Thank you for doing such a great job for Oregonians.
