The U.S. Postal Service, a vital public agency founded by Benjamin Franklin, has been an integral part of the fabric of our country from its very inception.
People rely on this iconic agency for a myriad of purposes— receiving daily mail, checks, notices from important government agencies, such as the IRS and Social Security, and a variety of other services.
The Republicans have now announced their intention to veto any bill that significantly augments funds allocated to the operation of the Postal Service.
Such a move could have drastic repercussions, the most severe of which would be the closure of the agency as early as this summer. This would be appalling and totally unacceptable.
President Trump strongly favors privatizing the agency, a plan that would definitely impair its efficiency.
People living in rural areas would be especially hard hit, receiving drastic postal rate increases.
Also, such a move would derail any hopes of a much desired vote-by-mail-system, leading to a dramatic upsurge of fraudulent voting. Our Postal Service is a lifeline for millions of Americans, and its demise would inflict a severe hardship on millions of Americans.
To add fuel to the fire, closure of the Postal Service would result in the loss of desperately needed jobs.
We cannot allow the Republicans to play these dangerous games.
Our Postal Service must continue to stand as a symbol and reminder of how a unified country serves its citizens with dignity and professionalism.
