The writer urges Oregon Democrats to apply to become delegates to the Democratic National Convention scheduled for Aug. 17-20 in Milwaukee, Wis.

Oregon Democrats will hold a remote election — which includes vote-by-mail — to select delegates to the party's national convention in Milwaukee, Wis., this summer.

At the Democratic National Convention, the party will officially nominate our presidential candidate and approve the national platform. Oregon's delegates are the heart of this process, representing Oregon Democrats and making sure their viewpoints are heard. Registered Oregon Democrats who want to participate can complete the online application. The deadline to apply to be a delegate, delegate voter, or both, is May 21.

In the past the Democratic Party of Oregon held delegate nominating conventions to choose the presidential nominee. Times have changed and the party adapted to establish a safe remote election process.

Our ancestors fought hard for our right to participate in the election process and we aren't going to lose those rights because of COVID-19.

I encourage Democrats to consider becoming a delegate.
