"When you interact with a Muslim, you're being deceived. Period."
Mark Shull, the man who consciously wrote out and posted these words for all to see online, is still a sitting member of the Board of County Commissioners.
The fact that Shull has refused to step down, despite overwhelming calls by both private citizens and public officials alike for him to do so, is disgraceful. He has publicly apologized for his past xenophobic remarks, but the fact remains that an apology is not enough.
As an elected official with influence and power, his words and actions carry with them a lot of weight. By not resigning, Shull sends the message that he has done nothing harmful to the Muslim members of our community and that he is above reproach due to his authority.
These are thought patterns befitting an authoritarian.
Commissioner Shull's continued presence on the board is, at this point, both extremely unprofessional and a slap in the face to marginalized people throughout Clackamas County, and only helps to build the case for him to be (inevitably) recalled by the citizens of Clackamas County.
