Sandy Senior Center prepares holiday fundraiser for Meals on Wheels program

From 7 a.m. to noon Saturday, Dec. 1, that jolly old elf Santa Claus will make a visit to the Sandy Senior Center, 38348 Pioneer Blvd., for the community's 31st annual Breakfast with Santa.

The center's Food Service Manager Iris White will act as Mrs. Claus, serving up pancakes, eggs, sausage, candy canes and a variety of beverages while Santa meets and greets the children in attendance.

"I love seeing the little kids have such a great time," said White, who has spearheaded the holiday event since its inception.

Besides enjoying a meal their parents didn't have to cook, children can get their photo taken with Santa and/or write him a letter. There also will be holiday shopping opportunities, with a vendor fair taking place simultaneously upstairs at the center.

The event is partially made possible through donations of food from local businesses, and acts as the largest annual fundraiser for the Meals on Wheels program.

White prepares nearly 65-70 meals for people in the Sandy area on a daily basis. An all-volunteer crew then delivers the meals to four different routes.

Last year, the event raised $1,651.33 for her feeding efforts.

"It brings the community together," said city of Sandy Events Coordinator Carol Cohen.

Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for children younger than 12. Photos with Santa cost $1, and raffle tickets are $1 each or seven tickets for $5.
