Sandy literary magazine an outlet for students, artists and editors alike
For teens looking to get published before leaving high school, English teacher Cherie Shields has an outlet: the Sandy Literary Magazine.
After a brief hiatus, Shields started the literary magazine up again last year, calling on all Sandy High students to submit artwork, photography, poems, short stories and all works of creative license and passion.
Submissions for the 2020 magazine are being accepted now, as are volunteers to edit and choose content.
"Because (last year) was our first magazine in a while, a lot of the material came from classes, but this year I hope it'll be more general," Shields said. "We want to double the size of the magazine."
So far, Shields said, there's been quite a bit of interest, and she hopes because of that, "this year we'll be able to be more selective."
The finished magazine will publish by the end of the school year.
"We do this because a lot of students don't have that outlet but still like writing and drawing," Shields said. "Students get a real zing out of being published. I think when students see that other people take their work seriously, they see the value of their work. It's a really important thing to give kids validation in their creative projects."
Shields also hopes by being exposed to publication earlier, students will be more likely to continue to seek publication for their work and maybe even pursue an artistic career.
"I think it's an important outlet to have," she said. "They realize their academic talents can pay off in recognition and publication. It gives students some confidence in themselves."
Students do not have to be in a creative writing class to submit work, and all students are also welcome to inquire with Shields about editing. There are no parameters on topics for writing and art either.
The deadline to submit work is Friday, March 20, and students can do so online in Shields' Google classroom, code eqm9pjk.
