Jeanne and Sam Bobrick's play "Weekend Comedy," now showing at Nutz-n-Boltz Theater, certainly proves that with age comes wisdom, and also a healthy dose of wise cracking.
When middle-aged couple Frank and Peggy are forced to share their vacation and two-room cabin with twenty-something lovebirds Tony and Jill, it becomes blatantly obvious that everyone involved have some learning to do about their own relationships and how to make them last.
"What we had back then was passion," Frank says to a reminiscing and dreamy Peggy. "What we have now is love."
As romantic as it looks on paper, that sentiment in the context of the play falls somewhat flat.
Throughout most of the couples' tight-quarters "vacation" experience, Frank argues that while what Tony and Jill has is cute, his and Peggy's marriage is more stable and it doesn't need to be passionate because it's marriage.
"He's always loved me like he's 50," Peggy says, arguing she and Frank never had that puppy love phase of the twenty-somethings. "For Frank, a day without worry is a day without sunshine."
While the older couple tends to paint a rather "dismal image of marital bliss" for the majority of the show, the younger couple later proves that underneath their happy, carefree, wanderlust-ful relationship is a trove of insecurity.
When Jill begins to yearn for the stability of Frank and Peggy's marriage, Tony begins to worry and the tables turn causing even more hilarity.
Throughout the scenes of obvious contention between Frank and Peggy, actors Michael Burles and Kelly Lazenby did a superb job at giving the couple emotional depth. Even when the two are bickering you can see an underlying admiration, just as you would with many older couples you might know.
Emalee Russell (Jill) and Kaleb Hood (Tony) do well to contrast Lazenby and Burles, playing the young lovebirds dynamic well.
The show runs through Sunday, March 22, with performances at 7:30 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and a 3 p.m. matinee on Sundays.
