Sandy girls reach the 5A water polo final
5A WATER POLO
CORVALLIS — Sandy's defense shut down Summit for a convincing 12-6 win in the 5A water polo semifinals Friday afternoon.
Senior Hana Wigzell scored all five of the Pioneers' first-half goals, and the Pioneers opened up a 7-3 lead after back-to-back goals by Morgan Seipert and Emma Donohue to start the second half.
The sizable cushion allowed the Pioneers to hunker down on defense, and as it turned out they had already done enough scoring to collect the win. Sandy kept two players back behind the center line for much of the second half, preventing the Storm from mustering any breakaway chances.
The Pioneers would see their lead grow to as many as seven goals as the clock ticked under five minutes.
Summit was held to just 3 of 11 (.273) shooting in the second half with the bulk of those chances coming from beyond the 5-meter line.
Sandy takes on Mount Hood Conference foe Hood River for the 5A title at 4:15 p.m. Saturday at Osborn Aquatics Center in Corvallis.
"The girls are really excited and ready to rise to the challenge," Pioneers' coach Jamie Nippert said.
