The Mt. Hood Community College women's basketball team moved a step closer to its first playoff appearance in nearly a decade with Saturday's 62-51 home win over SW Oregon.

The Saints were up by a bucket at halftime before finding their groove in the third quarter. Mt. Hood put up 22 points in the quarter, relying on Rachel Watson's size advantage near the basket.

She dominated action in the paint, finishing with a team-high 14 points to go along with 18 rebounds — half of those coming at the offensive end.

"They were missing a couple of their bigs today, so their tallest player out there was 5-foot-7," Watson said. "I just had to keep the ball up high, and they couldn't get to it."

A SW Oregon miss, allowed Mt. Hood two unlikely points when when Madison Allen took a couple dribbles down the sideline before letting loose with a long pass from behind half court with two ticks left on the clock.

The ball hit Makenzie Whitney in stride and she put her hands on it just enough to redirect the ball through the net at the horn for a commanding 48-36 lead.

The Saints (9-12) hold a two-game lead in the chase for the final playoff spot heading into Wednesday's 5:30 p.m. game at last-place Clark College.
