TROUTDALE — The Sandy girls basketball team had little trouble zipping past Reynolds 47-28 on Friday night.

Both sides struggled to get a ball through the net in the opening minutes, but Sandy slowed the tempo and took more than a minute hunting a good shot. The only problem. Reynolds center Kayley King swooped in and blocked it away. Sandy would get onto the scoreboard moments later when Tana Dwyre sent an inbounds pass to Athena Thomas for an easy two under the hoop.

The Pioneers put together another series of quick passes, this time finding Thomas along the baseline for an open jumper and a 9-4 lead at the end of the first period.

"Our mindset was to pass the ball and move their defense," Sandy point guard Bella Kansala said. "That opened up a lot of good shots for us."

SANDY POST: DAVID BALL - Sandys Bella Kansala finds her way through traffic, while running an offensive play in the Pioneers 47-28 win at Reynolds on Friday.

Sandy would put the game away before halftime.

Thomas dribbled the length of the floor before finding teammate Izzy Cabrera, who had slipped unnoticed into the corner for an open 3. A few minutes later, Dwyre would sink a long ball from the top of the arc to put Sandy up 24-8.

It was more of the same after the break with Bella Kansala starting the second half with a steal that she converted into a three-point play.

At the end of the third quarter, Cabrera dribbled unchallenged down the floor and beat the horn with an open 3 to put Sandy in charge 36-19.

"They left me open, so I just shot it," Cabrera said.

"She's always hitting those shots," Kansala added.

Cabrera sank another deep ball out of the corner, a shot that didn't wrinkle the net, as Sandy doubled up the Raiders 42-21 as the clock slipped under five minutes to play.

Cabrera sank four 3s on the night and finished with a game-high 18 points.
